5 Golden Maintenance Rules to Double Your Extrusion Line's Lifespan

A plastic extrusion line, much like a car, requires regular maintenance. You wouldn't want your multimillion-dollar investment to turn into scrap due to minor negligence. So, what routines should you follow to prevent unplanned downtime and extend screw-barrel life? Here is the maintenance guide prepared by the Delta Plastik Technical Service team:

1. Beware of "Cold Start" The biggest enemy of an extruder is trying to rotate the screw before the plastic has fully melted. This can even cause the screw to snap.

  • Rule: After the machine reaches the set temperature ("Soak Time"), wait at least another 15-20 minutes for the heat to fully penetrate the metal. Delta Plastik machines feature Automatic Cold Start Protection, which prevents this error via software.

2. Don't Neglect Gearbox (Reducer) Oil The gearbox is the muscle of the machine. Running with dirty or low-level oil causes gear wear and noisy operation.

  • Rule: Change the oil after the first 500 hours of operation. Thereafter, perform oil analysis and changes every 3000 hours. Using synthetic oils extends gearbox life.

3. Shutdown Procedure and Screw Purging Leaving raw material inside the machine to cool down after a shift leads to "Burnt (Carbonized) Material" issues upon the next restart.

  • Rule: If processing heat-sensitive materials (especially PVC), purge the screw with a stable, low-MFI Purging Compound before shutting down.

4. Heater and Thermocouple Check Temperature fluctuations ruin product quality. A loose heater band or an inaccurate thermocouple can cause plastic degradation.

  • Rule: Tighten all heater connections weekly (loose connections cause arcing) and verify thermocouple readings with an external thermometer.

5. Monitor Filter Pressure When screens get clogged, melt pressure spikes. This puts excessive load on the gearbox and screw.

  • Rule: Do not delay changing the screen when the pressure sensor triggers an alarm. Our automatic screen changers handle this process before pressure builds up.
